3 Guianas: Guyana, Suriname & French Guiana

Escape to the three Guyanas (Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana). On this tour we will enjoy the historical city of Georgetown, the famous Kaieteur waterfalls . You will learn about the Dutch excursion into Paramaribo, a UNESCO HERITAGE SITE; you’ll explore old plantations and visit the French Guiana’s Devils Island, made famous by Henri Charierre’s book Papillion, and the Capital, Cayenne. Discover magnificent buildings and interesting architecture and be immersed in the culture and traditions of the Guianas!
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival
Arrive in Guyana, South America's only English speaking country. Guyana is a gem waiting to be discovered. It is known as the land of many waters and the giants of the world, among them; the mighty Essequibo river, Giant Arapaima fish, mighty Harpy eagle, the Anaconda, Giant Otters and Jaguars. You are privately transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: Georgetown city tour Kaieteur Falls Excursion
This morning, you will depart the hotel early for a tour of Georgetown, the capital of Guyana. Georgetown has many historical monuments, many of them gracious colonial buildings with beautiful architecture ranging from Gothic to Elizabethan along wide tree lined avenues. Drive along Main Street, High Street and Brickdam and you will discover various charming and stately buildings from bygone era- notably, Red House, Austin House, Prime Minister’s Residence, State House built in 1845 as the governor's residence St Georges Cathedral, Picturesque City hall, Victoria Law courts (built in 1887), St Andrew's Kirk, Umana Yana, the Walter Roth Museum of anthropology and the national museum. Upon the completion of your city tour, you will be transferred to the local airport for your flight to Kaieteur Falls which is situated on the Guiana Shield, a plateau that is one of the world's oldest and remotest geological formations. The entire National Park is located within one of the largest and most biodiverse rainforests in the world. The park is home to the tiny golden frog which spends it entire life in the large tank bromeliads; white-chinned and white-collared swifts; red and green macaws, and the Morpho hecuba,among other species. This natural wonder has a sheer drop of 741 feet and is 5 times the height of Niagara Falls. After an extremely fascinating tour of Kaieteur Falls, you will return to Georgetown and to your hotel.

Day 3: Fly to Suriname, arriving in the afternoon. Overnight in Paramaribo.
You will be transferred to the airport for flight to Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname. Upon arrival you will be transferred to the city centre where you will enjoy a tour of Paramaribo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Shaded, tree-lined avenues, seventeenth-century Dutch wooden structures with synagogues, mosques and Christian churches coexist peacefully side by side. Overnight in Paramaribo

Day 4: Tour to plantation, flight to Cayenne
Travel by private boat up the Commenwijne River where you will pass fishing villages and former colonial plantations of which most are no longer active. Visit the open-air museum at Niew Amsterdam and Marienburg, the oldest former sugar plantation in Suriname returning at about 5:00 pm. Later you will be transferred to the airport for flight to Cayenne arriving 45 minutes later. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel in the city centre.

Day 5: Afternoon tour of city of Cayenne
After breakfast, enjoy a guided tour of Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana. This walking tour will allow you to admire Creole houses in the center but also the Pointe des Amandiers rocky headland and the “Fort Cépérou”, a small fort with a panoramic view built in 1643.
Your day will also include another must in Cayenne: a visit to its town market (held on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays). Lunch is therefore up to you but will be followed – also at your choice – by either a visit to the zoo in Macouria (animals and botanical gardens) or a conference by professional speakers from the Café des Sciences association (themes depending on schedules).Free time for dinner (in town or back at your hotel).

Day 6: Devils Island tour and overnight in Kourou
At 6:00hrs your guide will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to the pier (1 hour drive). You will then join sailing boat to Ile Royale, one of the three little islands which make up the Îles du Salut (Salvation’s Islands). You will see Devils Island from the Auberge (restaurant ) and will learn about its infamous history and its illustrious inmate- Richard Dryfus. You’ll spend most of the day on Ile Royale, and a brief visit to Ile Joseph where many prisoners spent most of their time ( time and tide permitting) . Lunch at restaurant of island is not included. The boat departs for Kourou at 4 pm. Arrive at 5 pm and transfer to your hotel. Meals (breakfast). Overnight in Cayenne

Day 7: Depart Cayenne
You will be transferred from your hotel to the airport. Depart French Guiana.
